Dolly Parton's Imagination Library
Feb 12, 2020
This week we have with us Jeanne Smituch, Canadian Coordinator for the Imagination Library speaking to us. https://imaginationlibrary.com/ca/
Dolly Parton’s Imagination Library, CanadaA Free Book Gifting ProgramDolly Parton’s Imagination Library of Canada is a free book gifting program devoted to inspiring a love of reading in the hearts of children everywhere. Each month, enrolled children receive a high quality, age appropriate book in the mail, free of charge. Children receive books from birth to age five. From a Toronto stage in November of 2006, Dolly Parton gleefully announced the Canadian expansion of her Imagination Library. It was the first international push for the organization. The development was thanks, in part, to an early agreement with the Canadian-based organization, Invest in Kids which proved to be just the beginning. Program coverage in Canada spans across Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Northwest Territories, Ontario, Saskatchewan and Yukon Territories. Each year, more books featuring Canadian authors and illustrators are introduced into the program. Additionally, titles with themes and subjects that appeal to the Canadian readers are added.

PridePEI
Jul 22, 2020
John is the Chair of Pride PEI and coordinates Pride’s fundraising, sponsorship, and strategic partnerships. He joined Pride in 2019 for the excitement of Pride’s 25th anniversary year, and continued as Chair to help the organization develop a long-term strategy for growth into the future. Beyond his work at Pride PEI, John is a serial entrepreneur experienced in operations management, corporate and non-profit governance, interactive and linear (film/tv/video) production and postproduction, and IT infrastructure. He is also an active participant on (too many) Boards, both fiduciary and advisory, from community to corporate to investment, on PEI, across Atlantic Canada, and around the world. When he’s not bandaging the papercuts he incurs shuffling all that paper, John spends his downtime skiing, sailing, playing squash, and at the cinema. Source: pridepei.ca |

“Urban climate resilience - a case study in Charlottetown”
Jul 29, 2020
Research interests
Dr. Khirfan’s current research project investigates the potential of daylighting (or deculverting) urban streams and the consequences of covering (culverting) them. Empirical studies abound on the ecological consequences of covering and uncovering urban streams such as, the hydrological effects (e.g. runoff and flooding) and geomorphological impacts (e.g. rise in temperatures and decreased fish habitat). Yet, there is a dearth in studies that address the links between urban stream daylighting and climate change adaptation and mitigation, and also, the enhancement of the public realm. Therefore, Dr. Khirfan’s research project draws on landscape ecology, urban morphology, and urban design theories to investigate the potential of urban stream daylighting at three interrelated levels:

Island Photography and photography journey
Aug 05, 2020
Who is Stephen?
I am a landscape, nature, wildlife and editorial photographer based in Prince Edward Island, Canada. This Island with borders defined by the ocean is the place I have called home for 40 years and where I have had the fantastic opportunity to live the life of a full-time artist through a mix of both photography and design. My days are spent working with the great team at silverorange and I am a creative lead for TinEye (a reverse image and photography search engine) and proud to have been part of the Firefox branding process. When not designing, the art of photography has become a full-time daily creative exercise for personal and commercial work. My current interests are focused on the changing landscape, conservation projects and the effects of our actions. I believe in a leave no trace attitude. I am a contributing educator at OFFBEAT and previously worked with a publisher to create and design more than 20 photography related ebooks. I am a Prince Edward Island tourism ambassador and co-author of the book 'A Photographer's Guide to Prince Edward Island'.

Our mandate is to provide short-term settlement services, and long-term inclusion and community integration programs for new immigrants in the province of Prince Edward Island. The Association speaks publicly on immigrant issues and advocates on behalf of newcomers. First generation Canadians serve on the volunteer Board of Directors. New immigrants are also employed as staff members of the organization and contracted to provide interpretation and translation services.
